The incident took place around 11:40 a.m. Sunday when the animal collapsed while walking in the water, said Fairfield Police Lt. Robert Kalamaras.
According to Kalamaras, the horse named "Boston," was being led by its owner from Norwalk on the beach in the area of 1235 Fairfield Beach Road. The horse was wading in shallow water when it had an unknown medical issue and collapsed in the water.
The owner made attempts to keep its head out of the water until police arrived. But the horse had died as a result of the medical issue, Kalamaras said.
Animal Control Officers responded and assisted with the investigation.
Department of Public works assisted by using a bucket loader to load the horse into the owner's trailer for transport.
At this time there is no indication of animal abuse. The owners tried to bring his head out of the water but he would not regain consciousness.
The exact cause of death can not be determined without a necropsy, officials said.
